A few months ago I was invited to compose the soundtrack to a small, text-based indie game, much in the vein of Fighting Fantasy & Lone Wolf, called "Venture Into Darkness".
Unfortunately the project was recently cancelled, leaving me with several tracks to release by myself, after finishing some and finalising the rest. Like the rest of my songs, I am making them available for free on Bandcamp.
"Remnants of Darkness" is part of what was meant to be the soundtrack to this game. It consists of five tracks:
1 - Ouverture
Of all the tracks in this EP, "Ouverture" is the first I wrote. While the first part of this track is bright and heroic, the second is much calmer and darker, to fit the general tone of the game.
It was going to be the main track for travelling in the forest, so it had to convey both a sense of life and a sense of danger.
2 - Skyward Trail
This was meant to be the city theme, its liveliness conveyed by violins playing short notes. Towards the middle of the track you can hear the theme used in the second part of "Ouverture"; it is employed several times in this soundtrack.
3 - Flying Arrows
Originally supposed to loop, this fight theme also includes the theme used in the first two tracks. It had to accompany combat scenes, but not be too over-the-top so the player could concentrate on reading.
4 - Quiet Stones
I was asked for a track that would fit in a mystical place, like an old sanctuary. At first I wrote the middle part, then wrote a darker, more melancholic part to bring an impression of unease.
5 - Troubled Souls
This is a blend of two different tracks - an ambient one in the background, with a melody on top, which was made to accompany the intro and character creation part of the game.
The ambient part comes from a late decision to, instead of looping a certain track non-stop for each place, have a looping ambience in the background, with certain musical phrases playing once to illustrate the player's arriving in a new place, or an event, an action, with the exception of fight themes.

As you might guess from the title, this is strange and eerie synth music meant to conjure a mystical film where all is not what it seems. Bandcamp New & Notable Aug 14, 2023
